Description
Sodium chloride Injection is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution of Sodium Chloride in Water for Injection. It contains no preservative.
Indications/Uses
Sodium Chloride is a replenisher of the extracellular fluid's electrolyte by intravenous infusion. It is used for the treatment of extracellular volume depletion, dehydration and sodium depletion due to excessive diuresis, gastroenteritis or salt restriction. It may be diluted to 0.45% as a source of water in patients who are unable to take fluids by mouth. A hypertonic solution may be administered to dehydrated patients preferably in conjunction with sodium bicarbonate.
Dosage/Direction for Use
If dilution is required, use Sterile Water for Injection or other suitable parenteral solvents to dilute Sodium Chloride 2.5 mEq/mL Injection prior to administration.
Sodium Depletion: Aseptically dilute 61.6 mL Sodium Chloride 2.5 mEq/mL injection to 1 liter with Sterile water for injection to obtain an isotonic solution (0.9%) and administer intravenously. 2 to 3 Liters may be given over 2 to 3 hours, thereafter, the rate may be reduced.
Sodium and Water Depletion: Aseptically prepare a solution containing 0.9% Sodium Chloride and 5% glucose and administer intravenously.
Fluid Replacement: Aseptically dilute 30.8 mL Sodium Chloride 2.5 mEq/mL Injection 1 liter with Sterile Water for Injection to obtain a 0.45% Sodium Chloride Solution and administer intravenously.
Acutely Severe Hyponatremia: Aseptically Sodium Chloride 2.5 mEq/mL Injection may be used to prepare hypertonic solutions in the following dilutions: 1.8 % Sodium Chloride Injection: 12.3 mL q.s. ad 100 mL solution; 3.0 % Sodium Chloride Injection: 20.5 mL q.s. ad 100 mL solution; 5.0 % Sodium Chloride Injection: 34.2 mL q.s. ad 100 mL solution; Or as prescribed by the physician.
Adverse Reactions
Overdosage may cause pulmonary edema, generalized edema, headache, tinnitus, sensation of warmth in lips, tongue and torso, abdominal, pelvic and back pain, diarrhea, muscle twitching, hyperactivity, confusion, numbness and occasionally, cellular dehydration.
Caution For Usage
Directions for Use: To be diluted with suitable parenteral solvent prior to intravenous administration. It may be administered as 2.5 mEq/mL solution if the blood is hypotonic at a rate of 100 mL/hour.
